snow flower and the secret fan

 

some years ago i read a book called snow flower and the secret fan.

it is a beautiful story written by lisa see about two young girls who are  chosen as each others “old same ” for life during the 19th century in china.

a time when young girls had a chance at marrying into a better family if groomed well enough,

properly bound feet were essential.

so was illiteracy.

however, some women in a remote part of china created a language called nu shu.

through gifts of handkerchiefs or fans, women would stitch notes to each other.

sharing the tales of their lives.

this is a very sweet read.

and i think it would make a great film as well.
