free summer lunch

July 13, 2009

growing up in brooklyn, summer time meant that at some point in the day we would go get a free lunch.

all public schools served free lunch, but the closest one to my house was el haj malik shabazz or better known as p.s 262.

i didn’t need the free lunch, i was fortunate in that sense.

however, there were a few kids on the block that had to go.

i think back now and hope that those days were made easier for those kids due to some of us just being nosey, wanting to tag along.

i remember liking the frozen orange juice and feeling like there wasn’t enough in those small cartons.

when i see the signs for free lunch it makes me smile.

it’s a part of growing up in brooklyn, getting your free summer lunch.
